Susegado, Preminger-wise

It's been kind of quiet lately, classic film-wise (as Jack Lemmon would say in The Apartment). I'll be taking a brief hiatus for the Labor Day weekend and I hope to come up with lots of new posts!

In September, I'll be starting my new Otto Preminger series. It's to prepare for my friend Kevin's lecture in November. If it weren't for the postal office losing my Netflix movies, I would have already started! Alas, I shall have to wait.

Here are the films I plan on watching and posting about here. If you are saying to yourself, why in the name of Helios is she not watching such Preminger classics as Laura, Where the Sidewalk Ends, Whirlpool, Fallen Angel, River of No Return and Anatomy of Murder? That's because I've already seen them, Silly! With so many Preminger films to see, I can't afford any repeats.

Angel Face (1953)
Advise and Consent (1962)
The Cardinal (1963)
Man with the Golden Arm (1956)
Daisy Kenyon (1947)
Stalag 17 (1953)
Carmen Jones (1954)
Bonjour Tristess (1958)

  1. I watched 'Daisy Kenyon' recently - it was kind of billed as a Film Noir but for me it was more like a melodrama.

Enjoy your Preminger watching, are you skipping 'Saint Joan'?

  2. Hey Richard!

Did you enjoy Daisy Kenyon, even though it was more of a melodrama? I'm a bit iffy about anything with Joan Crawford in it.

I'm watching as much as time will allow as well as what is available on DVD and on Netflix. Saint Joan wasn't on Netflix, thus wasn't a selection. I'll keep an eye out for it though.

  3. Yes, I did enjoy 'Daisy Kenyon', I came across it by accident. Joan Crawford is good in it.

'Saint Joan' is harder to get, I think it came out in Europe only. I have a French copy of that and 'Advise and Consent'.

  4. This week's Noir of the Week is another Preminger... Man with the Golden Arm (just a week after the excellent Where the Sidewalk Ends).

Make sure you're watching the DVD from Warner Bros. if you rent it- that's the really nice widescreen print. Others are cheap PD copies.

  5. Oh, I love Otto Preminger...and in my, uh, 'study' of Dana Andrews, I've got DAISY KENYON in my Netflix queue too.

But I'm also leery of anything involving Joan Crawford.

I think I saw MOMMIE DEAREST one too many times as a child.

I hope you're well, and having a great Labor Day weekend. :)

  6. I warmed up to Crawford. The two I like are Mildred Pierce (the best scene is her catching her teenage daughter with her man... Zachary Scott. unbelievable) and Sudden Fear. Outside of them Crawford is pure camp (Flamingo Road is a good example when she's supposed to be playing a young exotic dancer).

watch the clip about film noir here http://tinyurl.com/66pt5n and you'll see that scene from Mildred Pierce.

  7. Steve-O,

I actually do really love Mildred Pierce. I tend to watch that film at least once a year. I almost like to think that's not Joan Crawford playing the title role.

  8. The best Preminger film in my opinion, is The Moon is Blue. Holden and Niven are great. It is so funny, I found myself laughing out loud the second time I watched it. If you can find a copy, I highly recomend it. If you can't, let me know and I can get a copy to you.

Leave me a comment! If it is a long one, make sure you save a draft of it elsewhere just in case Google gobbles it up and spits it out.
