Classic Film Reading Challenge

#ClassicFilmReading Challenge

June 1st to September 15th

  • Read a classic film book
  • Write a review and post it on your Blog, Podcast, YouTube, Instagram, LibraryThing or Goodreads. Must be a public post.
  • Use hashtag #classicfilmreading on social media.
  • Repeat until you have read and reviewed 6 books!

DETAILS

What counts as a classic film book?
  • Classic film era is up for interpretation but the general rule is 1970s and earlier. Both Hollywood and International film qualify.
  • Biography, autobiography, memoir or a collection of interviews or letters all count. Can be about an actor, actress, director, writer, producer or other cast or crew member.
  • Book about films – specific film(s), genre, film-making process, etc.
  • A photography or art book related to classic films, fashion, style or a particular person.
  • Film criticism or analysis.
  • 20th century novel that was adapted into a classic film.
  • Novel fictionalizing a classic film or an actor/actress.

How many books should you read?

You can read one book in each category, 6 books in one category or mix it up. Read a book you’ve never read before or re-read an old favorite. The book can be brand new or long out-of-print.

What else can you post?

Feel free to share more than just your reviews. Be creative! Share your TBR stack of books, your shelfie (a selfie of your book collection), favorite place to read, favorite classic film books you've read in the past, etc. Keep the hashtag #ClassicFilmReading going all summer long with classic film book posts!

This is a self-directed challenge. There is no longer a sign-up or competition for a prize. Feel free to use the graphics and the hashtag in your posts if you decide to participate. Happy reading!

  1. Can I write a review on any 20th century novel that was adapted into a movie before 1970, or does it have to be considered a classic?

Leave me a comment! If it is a long one, make sure you save a draft of it elsewhere just in case Google gobbles it up and spits it out.
